We’re Going Home!

Hello! Greetings from beautiful, finally cooler (after the hot summer) Santa Cruz, Bolivia! As we head into fall here in the southern hemisphere, we know that you are heading into spring! What a wonderful time of year spring is, with the vegetation and the birds returning… I haven’t been home in the spring since I came to Bolivia 15 years ago! This year, though, we will be home! We have big news to share with you in this letter!

Our Burden: For many years now, Norah and I have discussed the possibility of some day returning to the United States to live and to plant a church there. Every time we travel home, I feel a large burden for the people of our country. We are sent from the USA, working so hard to reach and impact the people of Bolivia for Christ… BUT the truth is that America is just as much of a mission field as most of the rest of the world is. Statistics show that in 2010 only 16% of Americans attended ANY type of church on a regular basisThat percentage is even lower among younger generations. The church is losing ground fast! In 2007, before moving to Santa Cruz, we almost took the plunge to move back. We even announced it to quite a few people. After returning to Sucre though, we felt that God told us “not yet.” Later when we felt God calling us to plant a church in Santa Cruz, I pretty well gave up on the idea of ever again returning to the USA to live.

The Announcement: Amazingly enough, here we are today announcing the following… The time has come! After 15 years of ministry throughout Bolivia, we will be moving back to the United States in June to continue our call to expand God’s kingdom through church planting there. God has opened all of the doors and has resolved all of the problems of our leaving Bolivia – in an astonishing way!

God’s Ideas: Let me explain. In December of last year, as we were praying and making our plan for the churches in 2011, we felt God tell us that the time had come for us to go. We wrestled with the idea for awhile, thinking that it was just our ideas or emotions; but we finally came to the conclusion that God really was speaking. Our biggest worry was leaving the churches. Although we have progressed a lot since we began here in Santa Cruz, we felt that leaving the church right now would be murder. We also felt that, although the church in Sucre is doing very well, they could easily veer off track without our close supervision. We have put so much time and effort into the work here and in Sucre, and so many of you have given so much, that allowing those things to happen wasn’t an option. I told God that if he really wanted us to go, then he would have to give us a viable option that would not only allow the churches to continue forward, but to do so very strongly! Honestly, that looked grim. I finally wrote the pastors who have worked with us for years from the church in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After several weeks of contemplation, they finally asked that Joel (the pastor in the Sucre church) and I travel to Argentina to talk to them in person about it all. What happened there just blew us away! After our trip, we know 100% that God was behind all of this, and that He has everything under control.
What’s Going To Happen With the Bolivian Churches: Basically, the church in Argentina is going to take over the leadership of our churches in Bolivia. They are going to send a couple as missionaries to the Santa Cruz church, and they will be guiding and helping Joel & Veronica in the Sucre church. This church in Argentina has more than 25,000 members in their congregation, and of those over 500 are Bolivians. These 500 Bolivians are uniting to pray and fast for the Bolivian church and to give towards our two churches. They have set a $5,000 dollar monthly budget to help rent better, more visible, centrally located places and to reach out to the cities through advertising and evangelistic campaigns! The pastor of that church said,

“God has called us not to just plant another church. When we go to a city, we have to impact that place for Christ. We have to touch all parts of society: the rich, the poor, the government, etc. The churches in Sucre & in Santa Cruz must become ‘THE’ church for that city. When non-Christians think of a church, they think of that church.”

All that we could say was “Amen!” We are now preparing the Santa Cruz church for our leaving and the new couples arrival. We have announced this to them, and although many are sad, there is a great deal of excitement also.

What We Will Be Doing: Over the next year to year and a half, we plan to plant a church in a small to middle size city somewhere in the USA. Norah and I will be traveling home next week (on April 11th), to do a road trip to visit several possible plant locations. We will be traveling up to Minneapolis, and down through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North & South Carolina & Georgia. We will also be attending a church planters conference in Orlando Florida from April 26 – 29. After that we will return to Bolivia through May to finish selling off all that we can and then we’ll head back north with the entire family in June.

It may take quite a while, but once we are able to plant this church, we plan to continue working in Bolivia. We plan to use a percentage of all income in the church to help the Argentine church plant new churches all around the country. We also want to set up teams to travel there to help in building, evangelism, and anything that can possibly help advance the gospel in Bolivia.

Our Current Situation and Closing Petition: We’re a little nervous about how all of you, our supporters, are going to take this. We know that you have given so much, and it’s very important to us that you know that what you have given has not been in vain. God has, is and will continue to do so much in Bolivia, and it wouldn’t have happened without you. This, although very exciting in some ways, is very scary for us. We are basically starting over. We have nothing in the USA. Both Norah & I are 34 years old with three children, and we don’t have a house or a car or a bed. Of course, we are trying to sell our things here, and plan to buy a few things there. We’ll be able to sell our car at a good price, but most of what we have will not sell for much money. (Even the car isn’t ours; it’s the Hand of Hur’s vehicle!) We’ll only be bringing luggage home. We have no insurance and the income that we receive here will not reach living back there. It’s scary, but even so, WE BELIEVE GOD and with pleasure we are taking this step of faith!

We ask that during this time, you would PLEASE continue to be faithful with your gifts and support. This move is going to cost a lot of money, and we don’t have all of that money at this time. (By the way, we’ve never had all of the money BEFORE we decided to do what God tells us to do! ☺) In June we will begin fundraising for the new church plant, and we will talk individually with you about continuing your support for the first stage of the planting process. But before that, we ask that you would help us in any way possible to make this transition smooth for our family. I HATE to ask for personal help, but we’re at a place right now that we have no other option! Please pray for us too!!! Thank you once again for everything, and may God bless you abundantly!!!

Newsletter 1-11-2010

Hello and greetings from the warm side of the globe! We pray that all is well and that our Lord is blessing you and your family in a great way. Once again we begin a new year, and what expectations we have for it! It’s been several months since my trip to the US, and we are in full force preparing to launch the new church in Santa Cruz.

God is so Good!

God did such an amazing work during my (Jason’s) trip to the USA. It wasn’t easy. A week before my return to Santa Cruz we were only 1/3 of the way to our minimum goal of $36,000. In a moment of total honesty with God, after 5 weeks of frustration trying to raise funds, I told God that we would go forward no matter what. We knew that without reaching that goal, we would not be able to begin the church in the way that we felt God had called us. It’s amazing how God tests our faith and our will. I believe that God sometimes tests us to know if we truly trust His promises. He gave the call and the promise, but He would have to supply. Within the next few weeks, we saw the fulfillment of His promise in a way that we will never forget. By the time I was on the plane back to Bolivia, we had met 80% of our goal, and we passed it two weeks later!

Of course, God used YOU to fulfill His promise. What most touched us, were the sacrifices that so many of you made. God touches SO MANY PEOPLE, and He challenges them to trust in Him – in the same way that Norah and I have to trust in Him to provide. That opens the door for God to test and teach each of us. It’s not easy, but if our faith doesn’t fail (it will waiver sometimes, but we can’t let go), we will see His hand and miracles in each of our lives. That’s God’s circle of faith!

Progress With The Santa Cruz Church

After arriving in Santa Cruz, it took awhile to get things going. We began construction of the roof on December 9 and hope to finish on January 23. We have officially set our launch date as Sunday, March 7. During the next month we will prepare the building, advertize, and all that is needed for that first service. We will hold a retreat with those who are currently in our small groups from Feb 13-16 to minister and prepare them for the great things that God has called us to do this year. Please pray with us often during this time. Also, we will post pictures, our full strategy and progress on our website (hohnet.com) and through regular e-mails. If you do not get our e-mails, please send your address to jasonskipper@gmail.com so that we can keep you updated!

Other News

Our family is doing well. Both Erynn & Jordan love the English School that they attend. You can read more about it at their website http://www.scclc.org. Jordan is also working with a speech therapist, which is helping him greatly! That is so nice, since in Sucre we didn’t have access to anyone who could help him. Jordan will be 6 years old on Friday the 15th. Derrick is in his terrible twos… and if that “terrible” means ornery, then he has hit it full force! J Norah and I are doing very well… we celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary last week. Isn’t that amazing?! We plan to travel bi-monthly this year to Sucre to continue monitoring the progress of that church. Thank God, they are doing well without us.

MUSIC FEST!!!

Bluegrass & Southern Gospel Music Fest at Alpine Lake Resort! Have a fun evening on Saturday, January 30, from 5 pm – 9 pm while supporting our work here in Bolivia! The Savage Family, Crosscut, Faith Praise & Worship, Cindy Sites and Dean & Karen Ullery, and Heaven’s Mountain Band will perform. No admission fee! There will be a freewill donation in support of our ministry in Bolivia. (PRAY FOR GOOD WEATHER TOO!)

Please keep us in your prayers continually and know that we appreciate you tremendously. May God bless you richly! We ask that you remain faithful with your support, because that is what we live on and work with. You are so important to God’s work here. If God challenges you to sow more, please do! Our goal of $36,000 was a minimum, and we still need many things that will drastically help strengthen our impact during the first few months as a church! It’s not too late to get in God’s circle of faith! We love you!

Santa Cruz Church Plant Proposal

PDF File High Quality

PDF File Low Quality

As I begin this proposal, I (Jason) have to look back and laugh about how God works in our lives. Studying Business Management in college, I was taught to plan ahead and to not live life by the seat of my pants. Making a one, five, ten year and even a life plan is important. I took that advice, and really thought that I had it all figured out. I had a date when I would start building my own house, and was to start my own business after college. I guess that God had other plans because in 1996 He took me to Bolivia for two weeks to help build a seminary. Eight months later I returned planning to stay for a year. Then I met Norah. Need I say more? We married in 1998 and have dedicated our lives to God’s work. It seems ironic that 14 years ago I was “the man with a plan” and now here I am writing this proposal to plant our fifth church in a place that I never imagined going in my life!…

Letter USA Sept 09

Hello! You know, in this fast paced world, the Internet is SUCH a wonderful thing sometimes. After our last letter, Norah and I traveled to Argentina for a leadership conference. During that event, God CLEARLY reconfirmed to us how we are supposed to work and truly launch the church in Santa Cruz. After much prayer, we felt that it was absolutely necessary for me to return home for several weeks. We announced it on our website and on facebook, but it’s hard keeping everyone up to date through regular snail-mail! I arrived on the 17th, and will be returning to Bolivia on October 29. Erynn & Jordan are in school now, so it wasn’t possible for the whole family to travel with me.

We have BIG dreams in Santa Cruz. There is such a need there. In the few short months that we have been traveling to and living in that city, we have seen so much MORE poverty, misery, sickness, crime, corruption, broken families, promiscuity, etc., than what we are accustomed to seeing in Sucre. I admit that at first I saw planting a church in Santa Cruz more as a strategic move, planning to use that church to financially support church plants all around the country. Even though that is still the case, my heart has just been so impacted by the people, the lives and the stories that I have seen and heard there. Honestly, over half of the people we have met there have never lived with their father! Santa Cruz needs GOD!

IMPORTANT MEETING Next Saturday, October 3, at 6:30 PM at Faith U/M Church in Cranesville, WV!

One of the BIG problems that we’ve had over the years is that we have not been able to keep up with our partners very well. We haven’t seen some of you in many years! God Bless you for continuing to be faithful through it all. As they say, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind”, and that has definitely been the true for us in many cases.

Having said that, next Saturday, we want to invite you to a meeting that we will be having with all of our current and former supporters, those who have followed us throughout the years, and with all who would be even remotely interested in what God is cooking up in Bolivia! In this meeting we want to show appreciation for the love and support that so many have given us over the years, share the great things that God has done in Sucre, and to get everybody on board and excited about what he has called us to do in Santa Cruz!

The meeting will last about an hour and a half and I will be sharing pictures & videos. We’ll be serving snacks and I also hope to be able to chat with you and answer all questions that you would have.

May the Lord bless you in all that you do. We know that you are very busy, but ask that, in God’s Love for Bolivia, you would PLEASE try to attend! We hope & pray to see you there next Saturday!

Love,

The Skippers

Finally, a Place & a Call For Help

— Printable Version: letter.usa.june.29.2009.finally.2

Greetings from Santa Cruz, Bolivia! We pray that God blesses your life and family in an amazing way during this time. I can say that God has been so good to us!

We finally moved to Santa Cruz on June 11th. Moving from one city to another is not my idea of fun. It’s a lot of work and stress. We are now probably 80% unpacked and can live normal lives again. We’ve had quite a few people over to the house in the past week for a meal, and that’s been nice. Our house is very nice, although the yard is currently unusable. The last people who lived there had a large dog that dug up the yard, so they pulled out all of the grass and replanted before they left. It will be very nice about 2 months from now, but right now the kids haven’t been able to take advantage of a yard… something we haven’t had for years in Sucre. Rent is twice as expensive as in Sucre. We are paying $500 dollars a month for the place. The location is very good for us, which is very important. Santa Cruz is a city of 1.5 million people and is quite large. We are happy to be living only 5 minutes from the kid’s school and about 10 minutes (in our car) from the place we’ve chosen for the church. We feel that God has blessed us tremendously with this place!

The kids have taken the whole move great. They love it. In Santa Cruz there is a much larger English speaking community. In Sucre we had more or less 12 English speaking friends. In Santa Cruz there are probably several hundred. There’s even an English speaking church. Erynn and Jordan went to their Bible School last week. They absolutely loved it.

Jordan’s language skills have just blossomed lately. He still suffers a lot in pronunciation, but I think that he will be OK going into Pre-K this year at the English school. We have decided to start him in school a year later than normal, and feel that he will be better that way. He is now five… entering Pre-K this year and next year he’ll start Kindergarten. Derrick is just jabbering away all day. We bought a bunk bed for the boys now that we’ve moved. Jordan’s excited about sleeping on the top bunk, and Derrick likes not being stuck in the crib anymore! 8-) We live next to several soccer fields. I (Jason) have been jogging pretty well every day, and Erynn has been accompanying me on most of those runs. It’s nice to get out and move around a lot more (In Sucre, I always felt closed in). I’ve been feeling so much better. Since our trip to the states in December/January, I’ve lost 46 lbs. It’s amazing what that can do for your health.

Norah and I continue to pastor both churches in Sucre and Santa Cruz. The leadership team is mostly in charge of daily activities in Sucre. We fly to Sucre every other week to minister to the congregation on Sundays and to our leadership team on Mondays.

The contract for the place that we’ve been using for services over the past 4 years in Sucre has ended. The owner has asked us to start looking for another place, which is tough because there are VERY FEW places that are the size we need. We’ve been looking for months, but haven’t found anything suitable yet.

The church is Sucre is doing very well. Our leadership team seems to be growing without us being there. The fact that we are not there most of the time, but we continue to supervise and guide works very well. They are maturing quickly, without losing focus. We’re 100% sure that we’ve done the right thing in moving to Santa Cruz.

Over the past few months we have become increasingly frustrated with the work in Santa Cruz. We’ve been traveling there since February, and have opened several small groups. We had the large evangelistic campaign in April where around 55 people received the Lord. Those two things have gone very well. Our main frustration has been that we haven’t been able to really START as a church. We’ve been looking for a place desperately since April but hadn’t found anything. Any place that was suitable cost $1,500 dollars a month rent or more. A new church in Bolivia just can’t do that. Additionally, we need to buy chairs, a sound system, projector, and other things. It looked impossible. We had hoped that maybe something would happen so that we could do it, but no miracles occurred.

Several weeks ago Norah and I decided, after talking to our mentor in Argentina, that the best thing to do would be for me to travel home to the states for 4 or 5 weeks and to try to raise the money. I didn’t feel good about it, but it seemed like the only possible solution. We would raise the money needed to start and to rent a worthwhile place, planning to cover 5 or 6 months rent. During that time we would work hard with the church, trying to grow enough for it to be able to pay the rent on its own.

We had pretty well given up on finding a place before the trip, but two days before I planned to buy my ticket, we got a call from a couple in the church. They had just seen a place and wanted us to go see it. We did, and after a little brainstorming session we realized that the place would be perfect. :!: The rent was $600 a month, but this couple really wanted to rent the back part for themselves. It’s quite a large place, with several large rooms in the front, a 3000 sq/ft middle part, and a small apartment in the back. It was decided that we would pay $400 and they would pay $200 a month.

The middle part is the perfect size for the church. We need to put in a portable roof over the center part, take out the plants, and place flooring in the center. We have permission from the owner to do that. ;-) $400 a month in a strategic place is so much cheaper than anything else we’ve seen, and is probably reachable for the church from the beginning! Glory to God!

Ok, here’s the deal. We need some help. We finally have a place, but we have a lot of work to do before we can begin and we don’t have the money to do it. We know that God will provide, but we need to let the need be known. We MUST put in a roof that we can take out when we leave. It will need to be a metal structure with some type of outdoor material as a roof. That will cost about $8,500. We need to take out the garden in the middle and put down a simple floor. We estimate that will cost about $1,500. We have reduced our start-up costs by bringing 200 chairs and 2 large speakers from Sucre. We also decided not to buy instruments in the beginning. We will use backing tracks instead. We still need to buy a projector, a computer, decorations, and a stage. We also need about $2000 to print evangelistic material and advertisement for the long evangelistic campaign that we HOPE to begin on July 24th.

We have been somewhat frustrated over the past few months, but we believe that God knows EXACTLY what He is doing. We have received so many promises from Him for the work that has started here. We will work hard and believe in Him until the end. God is good, and we know that He will abundantly provide!

If you can give, remember that all gifts are tax deductible. You can give online on our website or you can send a check to: The Hand of Hur, Inc., 293 Bray Hill Lane, Oakland, MD 21550.

We thank you so much. May God bless your life immensely, in all you do! Please continue to pray for us daily. We need it so much.

Love,
